Listening to a song 'Bleaching Sun' from one of my favorite New Zealand based bands 'The Phoenix Foundation' i realised that the rather chilled and upbeat song is remarkably mythosy. Now im wondering if there is other music out there with a mythos undertone (intentional or otherwise, but not overt)

Lyrics (emphasis for your enjoyment):

Quote:

Well I'm waking up
to your crazy sh**
And I'm leaving now
Yes I'm a jumping ship
Because your heart is cold
like a box of beer
And I just can cope
with you my dear

Under the bleaching sun
out on the washing line
Hanging from our thumbs
until we get us dry
And I'm cooking up
a little kooky scheme [kook kook]
To clean their minds
Such precious minds
the sweetest minds I've ever seen

Now you're feeding on
the simple young
And your bloody tongue
doesn't turn me on
A sacrificial lamb
is in your arms
And I see your face
and its wicked charms
And the way you work the room
until everybody here starts bleeding from the eyes

Under the bleaching sun
Out on the washing line
Hanging from our thumbs
until we get us dry
And I'm a cooking up
a little kooky scheme [kook kook]
To clean their minds
and break your spine
apart in my hands

And this could be all
that you ever know
until you let it go your mind is gone
It's heading for the bleaching sun
I'll never know
I don't mind at all
'Cause I've seen it all fall before
As you head into the bleaching sun.

You're heading for the
bleaching sun

The Great Below by Nine Inch Nails

Quote:
Staring at the sea
Will she come?
Is there hope for me
After all is said and done
Anything at any price
All of this for you
All the spoils of a wasted life
All of this for you
All the world has closed her eyes
Tired faith all worn and thin
For all we could have done
And all that could have been

Ocean pulls me close
And whispers in my ear
The destiny I've chose
All becoming clear
The currents have their say
The time is drawing near
Washes me away
Makes me disappear

And I descend from grace
In arms of undertow
I will take my place
In the great below

I can still feel you
Even so far away

Who's to say Cthulhu isn't really a she?

The first two verses of Joy Division's Digital always makes me think of something mythos related. Either a hound in tindaols (sp?) after someone, or some sort of wizard making a mistake (Don't call up what you can't put down).

Quote:

Feel it closing in,
Feel it closing in,
The fear of whom i call,
Every time i call,
I feel it closing in,
I feel it closing in,
Day in, day out,
Day in, day out,
Day in, day out,
Day in, day out,
Day in, day out,
Day in, day out.

I feel it closing in,
As patterns seem to form.
I feel it cold and warm.
The shadows start to fall.
I feel it closing in,
I feel it closing in,
Day in, day out,
Day in, day out,
Day in, day out,
Day in, day out,
Day in, day out.

And there is always Metallica:

Messenger of fear in sight
Dark deception kills the light

Hybrid children watch the sea
Pray for Father, roaming free

Fearless wretch insanity
He watches lurking beneath the sea
Great old one forbidden site
He searches, hunter of the shadows is rising
Immortal in madness you dwell

Crawling chaos, underground
Cult has summoned, twisted sound

Out from ruins once possessed
Fallen city, living death

Fearless wretch, insanity
He watches lurking beneath the sea
Timeless sleep has been upset
He awakens, hunter of the shadows is rising
Immortal in madness you dwell

In madness you dwell

Not dead, which eternal lie
Stranger eons death may die

Drain you off your sanity
Face the thing that should not be

Fearless wretch, insanity
He watches lurking beneath the sea
Great old one forbidden site
He searches, hunter of the shadows is rising
Immortal in madness you dwell

Tiger Army

Nocturnal - (Demo)
Album: Early Years
Year: 2002

You have ignored us
We've become nocturnal
Pushed out of the day into the night
We are invinsible but
We can see you
Night vision, don't need the light

WE CAME FROM NOWHERE
but we're not nothing
YOU BETTER BEWARE
the Nocturnal in shadows dwell

Gone... all that's come before
We are the nocturnal
Like creatures at the bottom of the sea
if they could rise
Our faces poison pale
Crawl evolution's hellish trail
And wait for the night to arrive...

Truly is it said that once you are in his clutches, Great Cthulhu is never, ever, ever ever going to give you up...

there's always the vision bleak, most of their songs are full of mythos references, with song titles like Kutulu!, Dreams In The Witch-House, Part I: The Shining Trapezohedron, Part II: The Vault Of Nephren-Ka.

Oddly enough (my DG leanings are comming out here) most of my favorite "mythosy" songs come from popular music. Here are two examples.

"Doctor my Eyes" by Jackson Browne
Quote:

Doctor, my eyes have seen the years
And the slow parade of fears without crying
Now I want to understand
I have done all that I could
To see the evil and the good without hiding
You must help me if you can

Doctor, my eyes
Tell me what is wrong
Was I unwise to leave them open for so long

'Cause I have wandered through this world
And as each moment has unfurled
I've been waiting to awaken from these dreams
People go just where there will
I never noticed them until I got this feeling
That it's later than it seems

Doctor, my eyes
Tell me what you see
I hear their cries
Just say if it's too late for me
Doctor, my eyes
Cannot see the sky
Is this the prize for having learned how not to cry

"No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature" by the Guess Who
Quote:

Lonely feeling deep inside
Find a corner where I can hide
Silent footsteps crowding me
Sudden darkness but I can see
...

In the silence of her mind
Quiet movements where I can find
Grabbing for me with her eyes
Now I’m falling from her skies
...
You’re tripping back now to places you’ve been to
You wonder what you’re gonna find
You know you’ve been wrong but it won’t be long
Before you leave ‘em all far behind

‘Cause it’s the new Mother Nature taking over
It’s the new Splendid lady come to call
It’s the new Mother Nature taking over
She’s gettin’ us all
She’s gettin’ us all.

...
No use callin’ ‘cause the sky is fallin’
And I’m getting pretty near the end
A smoke-filled room in a corner basement
The situation must be right
A bag of goodies and a bottle of wine
We’re gonna get it on right tonight

‘Cause it’s the new Mother Nature taking over
It’s the new Splendid Lady come to call
It’s the new Mother Nature taking over
She’s gettin’ us all
She’s getting’ us all...

(Cummings)
Jocko says "Yes," and I believe him
When we talk about the things I say
She hasn’t got the faith or the guts to leave him
When they’re standing in each other’s way
You’re tripping back now to places you’ve been to
You wonder what you’re gonna find
You know you’ve been wrong but it won’t be long
Before you leave ‘em all far behind

‘Cause it’s the new Mother Nature taking over
It’s the new Splendid lady come to call
It’s the new Mother Nature taking over
She’s gettin’ us all
She’s gettin’ us all.

I guess I like them because they only get mythosy if you are listening for them... Has that "hidden world, world within a world" feel. Anyone out there with more songs like these?

Eric

David Bowie --- Starman wrote:
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He's told us not to blow it
Cause he knows it's all worthwhile
He told me:
Let the children lose it
Let the children use it
Let all the children boogie

Godspeed! You Black Emperor --- Dead Flag Blues wrote:

The car's on fire
And there's no driver at the wheel,
And the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides.
And a dark wind blows.

The government is corrupt,
And we're all so many drunks with the radio on the curtains drawn.
We're trapped in the belly of this horrible machine,
And the machine is bleeding to death.

The sun has fallen down,
And the billboards are all leering,
And the flags are all dead at the top of their poles.

It went like this:
The buildings toppled in on themselves.
Mothers clutching babies,
Picked through the rubble and pulled out their hair

The skyline was beautiful on fire,
All twisted metal stretching upwards,
Everything washed in a thin orange haze

I said "Kiss me. You're beautiful. These are truly the last days."
You grabbed my hand, and we fell into it,
Like a daydream or a fever.

We woke up one morning and fell a little further down.
For sure it's the Valley of Death.
I open up my wallet,
And it's full of blood.

Clutch --- Escape From The Prison Planet wrote:
Get out.
Eject.
Escape From the Prison Planet.
Ejector seat ignite.
Billion people harvest on Mars.
Rebuild the remnants of the obelisk,
One mile from the pyramid.
Escape From the Planet of the Apes.
Go forth, ad infinitum.
Return the relics to the Elephant.
And Atlantis rises.

Ah yes Starman! Can't for get "Oh! You Pretty Things!"
Quote:
Wake up you sleepy head
Put on some clothes, shake up your bed
Put another log on the fire for me
Ive made some breakfast and coffee
Look out my window what do I see
A crack in the sky and a hand reaching down to me
All the nightmares came today
And it looks as though they're here to stay

What are we coming to
No room for me, no fun for you
I think about a world to come
Where the books were found by the golden ones
Written in pain, written in awe
By a puzzled man who questioned
What we were here for
All the strangers came today
And it looks as though they're here to stay

Queen's Seven Seas of Rhye always seemed vaguely mythosy to me.

Quote:
Fear me you lords and lady preachers
I descend upon your Earth from the skies
I command your very souls you unbelievers
Bring before me what is mine, the seven seas of rhye

Can you hear me you peers and privy counsellors
I stand before you naked to the eyes
I will destroy any man who dares abuse my trust
I swear that you'll be mine, the seven seas of rhye

Sister, I live and lie for you
Mister, do and I'll die
You are mine, I possess you, I belong to you forever

Storm the master-marathon, I'll fly through
By flash and thunder-fire I'll survive, I'll survive, I'll survive I'll survive, I'll survive
Then I'll defy the laws of nature and come out alive
Then I’ll get you
Be gone with you, you shod and shady senators
Give out the good, leave out the bad evil cries
I challenge the mighty titan and his troubadours
And with a smile I'll take you to the seven seas of rhye

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside
Oh I do like to be beside the sea
Where the brass band plays, tidily, Om, pom, pom
Oh I do like to be beside the seaside
Oh I do like to be beside the sea
Where they crowd beside the sea
And besides themselves with glee beside the seaside
