Music of the Spheres Posted on: 10-27-2009 @ 05:38 pm |

I'm running Music of the Spheres in two parts leading up to Halloween this year. Part 1 was last week and it went oddly.
This is a modern scenario; I set it in 1994. Two characters with connections to Stan Arnold arrived in town at about the same time (luck of the dice) during a terrible rain storm. One (Anwar) went straight for the sherriff's office and the other (Cody) went to the diner across the street.
After a strike out to see Arnold in jail, Anwar left the sherriff's office and bumped into Cody. The together struck a deal with the sherriff to maybe see Arnold the next day. But before they could strike a deal something went south in the diner.
The cook threw a pot of boiling water on a waitress.
Now, maybe I introduced this bizarre behavior too early. I think I did. It screwed up the pace. The characters were already convinced that this was highly unusual behavior for Arnold and as soon as they saw it exhibited elsewhere, the players concluded that something was amiss.
Shortly after that, a rabid dog charged Anwar and bit his leg. After learning that this dog belonged to the Taylor family and was well behaved, the players decided that something was deinitely amiss in the town and causing odd behavior of their friend and others, including animals.
It felt too soon for me. It felt like they were 'getting it' too quickly.
The next morning they gained audience with Stan (successful Persuade) and he explained that he was working at a radio-teloscopy station and that they were all working way too hard.
One of the players said something about signals from the stars affecting people. He almost convinced Sherrif Carpenter that the discovery at the station must have some relationship to the odd behavior. He used a combination of the scaulding water incident, the crazed dog, and Arnold as examples and rationalized that astrology is just one demonstration of how planets affect human behavior. Lunacy was another example. And how the moon affect the tides was a final point. Really good explanation.
Too much though for Carpenter, still I couldn't help but feel like the punchline was spent. The player was right. But not entirely.
They were swarmed by grasshoppers on their way back to the car.
They went to the station to learn more about the people with whom Stan worked. There they met Harlan Bennet. During a meeting with him they heard a strange music being played that made them all drift off momentarily.
On their way down from the tower, in the elevator, an earthquake hit. The characters were stuck in the elevator for an hour.
They met Mancini and helped recalibrate her telescope. Charmed, she told them a little more about the research and played the transmission for them - music! It made her randy and one of the characters became irritable.
So with all this, they have gained a clear idea that these strange behaviors and natural phenomenon are the cause of some transmittence. But they don't do anything about it.
The Mi-Go attack one of the radio dishes and fail. They miss with their bombs. They are seen, and one of the characters looses 5 SAN. He suffers temporary amnesia.
They are escorted to one of the apartments and allowed to stay the night to rest up. Clearly something is fishy, but nobody is totally sure.
Then the Mi-Go send a dream. One of the characters fails his resistence check and undergoes the entire dream sequence of clouds, lightening, and the image of the planet god (miraculously rolling a 09 on his SAN loss of 1d100!).
They both realize something is up, but I'm not happy with how they got there.
I think I made some mistakes with pacing. Too much too soon. They have made the connection between events in space and events here on earth, but how did they get it so early?
Introducing the concept of radio-teloscopy and then causing three unusual events in a row probably gave it away. Also, there are no red herrings in this scenario. At least one might fog the cause/effect.
In part 2 I may try a red herring. Not sure what yet. Maybe a contaminent is found in the water, which might be causing the change in behavior. Some other, alternative cause I think will make it more confusing and maybe delay things.
Not sure. Not happy, just don't feel like the pace was right. However, they've not discovered exactly what is happening. Nor have they taken any actions to fix it. Hopefully in pt. 2.
