Summary

While exploring a dark area, an investigator is attacked by a shadow. The investigator's shadow seems to be injured in the assault, stoking a longing to have it restored.

Synopsis

While exploring a pitch-black location with only a small light, the investigator slips and nearly tumbles into an open pit, losing their light source in the fall. Scrambling blind for another light source, they hear something climbing up through the pit. Just when the investigator finds a light, they see a shadow, which attacks and casts the area back into darkness. But with each match they light, the creature recoils, although not before attacking the investigator's own shadow. The investigator eventually gets a steady light source going, forces the creature to cower, and flees. However, the mortal's leg hurts, and when they reach the surface, they see that a chunk has been torn out of the shadow of their leg.

The scenario acts as an introduction to the larger Les 5 supplices campaign. Designed to be completed in an hour, the short sequence introduces the concept of shadows that can harm the material world, and serves to implicate the investigator into the quest to find out more about the Empire of Shadows in the longer campaign. The scenario leaves vague the reasons the investigator is in a dark place at the beginning, suggesting that the scene may be included in another scenario if desired.
