Tentacle Ratings

A rough measure of how "Lovecraftian" the work is:

  • SS___ (Two Tentacles: Barely Lovecraftian; vaguely similar in tone, could be a very loose adaptation)

A comic, post-modern treatment of reality-bending Lovecraftian cosmic horror in a similar vein to the likes of John Dies at the End (2012 film) and Evil Dead (1981 franchise)....

Note: This rating is not intended as a measure of quality, merely of how closely related to Lovecraftian "Weird" fiction the work is.

Review Links:

  • Y.Whateley - "The basic story (private detective finds a creepy tome and weird things begin happening when he reads it) is fairly familiar as standard-issue Lovecraft pastiche, but the cast (especially Matt 'Max Headroom' Frewer and William B. 'Cigarette-Smoking Man' Davis) helped make this low-budget movie a lot more fun than it perhaps could have been. Compare to John Dies at the End (2012 film) in theme, content, and tone, and Ash vs. Evil Dead (2015 series) for a more over-the-top treatment of some similar ideas...."
  • Thakgore at HorrorSociety (link) - 3/5 "In conclusion I have to say I'm both encouraged and frustrated by this film.... I'd say give it a look if you don't mind not getting any answers and just want to watch something weird. It's got weird locked down, that's for sure."
  • Michael Klug at HorrorFreakNews (link) - " I may not be able to quite explain what I just saw or what exactly happened in the new indie horror/sci-fi/neo-noir film Residue, but I definitely can tell you I enjoyed it... whatever 'it' is."

Comments, Trivia, Dedication

  • The 2018 sequel in production, The Pain Doctors, is rumored to be about: "The Pain Doctors [that] live inside the cracks of reality, outcast but still committed to furthering their legacy of medical experimentation. A mere juxtaposition of our current social and cultural bio-tech corporations and the various machinations that keep these companies intact."

Keeper Notes

  • The basic plot (a private detective is hired to obtain a creepy tome for a shifty client and weird things begin happening when he begins reading it) is probably trite on its own for use as a CoC plot, but could probably be modified with unique plot twists to sound fresh; some inventive elements from the movie (the "residue" is apparently related to the Fountain of Youth in some way, for example) might be reused in other contexts.
