The "Laqueus" or "Greist Sequence": 9920.229989212.334
9920.229989212.334 is a dangerous, sanity-threatening number sequence appearing in multiple Delta Green scenarios and source books, including:
- The Delta Green chapter on Majestic.
- The scenario "The Last Equation", by Dennis Detwiller
- A 1561 tome, Book of Many Wonders ("Libri Plures Admiratio"), by Fascius Claudan
- A 1947 tome, The Diary of Anton Greist
Brussels-born mathematician, inventor, sage, and astronomer Fascius Claudan (1535-1561) published the Libri Plures Admiratio ("Book of Many Wonders") in 1561 following his journeys to Egypt, Persia, Central Asia, and stranger locales, after which Claudan returned, withdrawn and strange, perhaps "mad" by some accounts. This book contained a "puzzle" known as The Laqueus, a short code or equation, was rendered just days before his mysterious death, and is regarded by mathematicians as either an epiphany or complete gibberish, with few people claiming publicly to understand it or to have solved it: it holds a place in the annals of cryptography as one of the few cryptograms to resist modern attempts at cracking, and it is used as an example in many cryptography tomes as a "clean" cypher — one that remains untranslatable. Claudan claimed in a confused account that he learned the puzzle from a 600-year-old Arab in either Constantinople or in a "grand library of Nakotic" in 1560.
Many mathematicians might describe the solution as a "fractal key" which reveals a chain of recursive prime numbers, "unlocked" in sequence, which reveal additional, very large, and previously unknown prime numbers, which in turn reveal odd mathematical structures above, beyond, outside, within, and under the highest prime numbers identified to date. Particularly sensitive mathematicians might also describe the solution as a "trap", a sort of eternal "Möbius Strip" of chained puzzles and solutions that, once revealed to a mathematician capable of understanding them, consumes the trapped mathematician in a series of bizarre mathematical coincidences that transcend space and time. To those not schooled in the advanced mathematics necessary for understanding the puzzle's implications, the numbers remain gibberish: a madman's last bizarre message to the world.
Early symptoms of cracking the solution include euphoria, depression, paranoia, delusional rants about secret numerical coincidences discovered in every-day objects, numbers, rhythms, and messages, and ravings about an expansion of the victim's consciousness and understanding, allowing a window into the nature of creation and the structure of space and time.
Michael Wei, a graduate student in mathematics at Columbia University of Mathematics, appears to have successfully cracked the Laqueus code on October 12, 2010, in the midst of a mysterious and violent series of strange events.
This number was discovered/transmitted to defected German scientist Dr. Anton Greist during his brief, supervised contact with a surviving Grey Alien in the wake of the Roswell Incident in 1947. Analysis of Greist's diary suggests that the alien may have infected Greist with the number in retaliation for being subjected to experimentation during its captivity in Roswell, or perhaps as part of an escape attempt it would have attempted in the ensuing chaos and violence, but seems to have failed to take advantage of.
Tomes and Spell
Diary of Anton Greist
A tome, The Diary of Anton Greist, completed on August 25, 1947 at Los Alamos, handwritten in German, details the examination of the wreckage and remains from the Roswell incident and the consciousness-expanding contact with the remains of a Grey Alien which produced this number.
Reading the tome yields:
- Cthulhu Mythos +1%
- Spells: "Expansion of Consciousness"
Understanding the number is described in game terms as a spell, "Expansion of Consciousness", which can only be learned with a 60% or higher in Mathematics or Physics.
Book of Many Wonders
A tome, Book of Many Wonders ("Libri Plures Admiratio") by Fascius Claudan, completed in 1561 in Brussels, Flanders, handwritten in Latin, details many strange things, including an "Arabic Puzzle", the Laqueus, which produced this number. The original and only known remaining copy of the book is kept at L'Universite Livre de Bruxelles, in Brussels, where it is rarely (if ever) looked at and has remained generally untouched until rediscovered by Michael Wei in 2010.
Reading the tome yields:
- Cthulhu Mythos +X%
- Spells: "The Laqueus"
The number known as the Greist Sequence is best described as a "key" or a "spell" for the purpose of [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED]. It was discovered/produced/obtained in 1947 by Dr. Anton Greist following contact with [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] in Los Alamos, New Mexico, as part of his assigned research into [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] , [REDACTED] , and [REDACTED] . Details of the generation of this number and other findings during the investigation were recorded in Dr. Greist's journal, currently located at [REDACTED] in the care of [REDACTED]. The sequence, properly unlocked, behaves in a manner which [REDACTED] has compared to "a virus", and [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED], and was only stopped after [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] . Based on the information found in [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] determined that anyone with a higher understanding of mathematics is particularly vulnerable to infection, and the infection is invariably described by infectees as "an expansion of consciousness", a phrase whose use can be considered a symptom, and which can be used as a keyword for the purposes of [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED].
Hard and soft resources which have been confirmed to be infected should be neutralized as immediately as practical. Resources which are suspected of being infected should be isolated from electronic equipment and other possible vectors for infection, and held for analysis.
This number should be thoroughly deleted from all government computers, and scoured from the internet before initiating contact with the routing agent.
Reports of suspected or verified infection should be forwarded immediately to agent Bartholomew Green ( bart (dot) green (at) routing (dot) NSA (dot) gov ), subject: "RE: EXPANSION OF CONSCIOUSNESS". The body of your message should contain your code name or serial number, current location, the suspected source of the infection, and a list of all known and suspected infectees. Do NOT include the number itself in your message. Cease all involvement with the case; ALL details should be considered classified.
- The number might be distributed on floppy disks or other digital media.

- Threshold (2005 television series) has some thematic similarities, using hyper-dimensional fractal geometry as a vector for transmitting psychological, physical, and genetic changes to its victims
- the Twilight Zone (1985 television series) episode "Need to Know" shares some similarities, in the form of a madness-inducing secret passed from person to person
- the film Pontypool (2008 film) shares some similarities, in the form of madness-inducing phrases that are passed from person to person by word of mouth
- the Outer Limits (1995 television series) episode "Music of the Spheres" has some similarity, except that a corrupting signal is being transmitted by friendly aliens as a form of "music" audible only by children
